Climbing Mt. Kilimandjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising 5,895 meters above sea level.

Climbers pass through five distinct climate zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit.

Climbing routes

Machame Route (“Whiskey Route”)

Recommended for experienced hikers who want a strong mix of beauty and challenge.

Duration: 6–7 days

Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

Success Rate: High 

Scenery: Excellent (rainforest, Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, alpine desert and glacier)

Accommodation: Camping

Marangu Route
("Coca-Cola-Route")

Suitable for those looking for a budget or less rugged experience

Duration: 5–6 days

Difficulty: Moderate

Success Rate: Moderate (lower due to fast ascent)

Scenery: Less varied

Accommodation: Huts (the only route with dormitory-style huts)

Lemosho-Route

Ideal for photographers and trekkers enjoying a more quiet experience

Duration: 7–8 days

Difficulty: Moderate

Success Rate: Very High (acclimatization and high summit success)

Scenery: Exceptional – one of the most beautiful and least crowded routes

Accommodation: Camping

Rongai Route

Only route approaching from the northern side (near Kenya)

Duration: 6–7 days

Difficulty: Moderate

Success Rate: High (gentle and steady climb)

Scenery: Drier, less varied (good during rainy seasons)

Mt. Meru Climb

Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, standing at 4,566 meters, located within the beautiful Arusha National Park, providing the unique opportunity to encounter giraffes, elephants, and colobus monkeys along your trekking route.

Duration

typically 4 days, ascending through tropical rain forests teeming with wildlife, lush forests, moorlands and rocky terrains

Best time to climb

from June to October and December to March when the weather is relatively dry and the conditions are best for trekking

​

Moderate to challenging (requires good physical fitness because of steep heights)

4 day climb: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut, Saddle Hut, the Little Meru summit

3 Days: skips Miriakamba Hut and goes directly to Saddle Hut
